how to kill the golden goose

the goose itself is not gold. its eggs are. there's a mysterious production element there. inside the goose something is happening and we can't be sure what. the classic has it down to greed but even curiosity will do; either way you open up the mysterious goose which kills the goose and doesn't give you the source of the gold.

then you move on to the next goose.

wait--the next goose? of course! there's always a next goose. because the goose is goodhart's law kind of sort of if you squint just right.

i say this because young filmmaker from youtube strikes gold with horror film is the new meta right now. studios are rushing to find the next guy (always a guy apparently) to produce the next buzzy horror film on the cheap.

this might work for a while. but then two things will happen. 1) they will run out of real talent and vision in the youtube space and 2) people will start seeing youtube as a pipeline to "real" movies and start saturating the space.

this is always the way. it's golden goosehart's law if you want to get technical. the place that produces the flash in the pan genius stops producing once everyone starts looking there.

same thing happened with the ya-novel-to-movie pipeline. "hunger games" did gangbusters. a few others did ok. then a bunch of crap killed the genre.

taste (and creativity (and the whims of people)) defies factoryization. when you zig everyone eventually zag. this is why we don't wear powdered wigs anymore.

we should bring back powdered wigs. fantastical head accoutrements are sadly all too rare these days.
