how to appreciate a moment of cool

we're in heatwave right now.

right in the trenches of it. mosey through your garden to the soundtrack of your neighbours a.c. just absolutely going for it. full blast. no stopping.

go to your inlaws for a dinner. there are 20 people there. the a.c. can't keep up. it's muggy outside but you dip out anyways. it's muggy inside and there are people there.

a thunderstorm front rolls through. sudden. talk of derechos. nobody knows what that is probably because they've never been hit by one. someone gets out a lightning tracking app. that thunder is from just up north.

rain follows. not much but enough.

then the temps come down with the humidity. ten degrees--centigrade--in a few minutes.

they could open the windows but they don't. maybe they don't know. you go outside and sit on a swing seat with no cushions idly reading on your phone.

you get about five minutes before someone comes to shepherd you back inside--inadvertently but it still happens that way--where they're talking about trucks or trains or whatever.

no one opens a window.
